The city of Karlsruhe

Founded in 1715 by the Duke of Baden-Durlach, Karlsruhe is the second largest city in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. The city is situated in the southwest of Germany, close to the borders of both France and Switzerland, and has a population of more than 275,000. Bordered on the south by the beautiful Black Forest and on the west by the famous Rhine River, the city’s landscape offers attractive woods, parks, and lush meadows, all providing excellent destinations for leisure trips and the chance for relaxation.

Public transport

Karlsruhe has an excellent public transport network with tramlines covering the whole region. To have a look at the KVV tramline stations and for more information have a look at the KVV website.

Your student ID card ("FriCard") is valid as a local traffic ticket from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., but only in combination with a KVV certificate that can be downloaded at the "Studierendenportal".
