Experiment-Guided Development of a Novel Computational Model of Topographic Mapping in the Retinotectal System

In my thesis project, I will analyze the development of axonal wiring between retina and brain through computational simulation and experimental validation. A theoretical model is formulated which implements all potentially relevant molecular interactions involved in this developmental process. The model is used to predict the outcomes of in vitro assays of axonal guidance, which are subsequently experimentally realized. To this end, assay substrates of guidance molecules are micropatterned using UV light through caging with photolabile groups and photo-deprotection.
