Optically Powered Radio over Fiber Networks

The increasing demand of high data rate applications and services like voice-over IP, audio and video broadcasting, or high-speed Internet access will require broadband home networks (> 1Gb/s) with an optical fiber backbone. In radio-over-fiber systems, radio signals are transmitted from a central unit to remote wireless access points (AP) and thus providing still the flexible wireless connectivity to the end-user. The goal of my thesis is to investigate the feasibility of powering these APs optically, i.e. transmitting not only radio signals but also power over the optical fiber.
