Optical investigation of molecule diffusion through a single nuclear pore

New understanding of life processes at fundamental subcellular and molecular levels will have a profound impact in many fields of science and technology. Hybrid devices with an organic-inorganic nanostructured interface combined with optical near-field methods are promising candidates for gaining direct access to processes of single biological molecules on a nanoscopic scale. With this technique nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are investigated to get more insights between the structural properties of a NPC and its function as a biological transport machine.
