The department for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology has strong links to the Forschungszentrum Informatik (Research Center for Information Technologies (FZI)). The FZI hosts a part of the activities on biomedical photonics of K. Müller-Glaser within its division of Medical Information Technology. The FZI is a non-profit contract research organization that concentrates its efforts on novel information technologies on the basis of recent but already proven techniques. The organization of the FZI allows scientists to extend their efforts in academic research to more market-oriented activities. For this purpose, a technical and organizational infrastructure is provided that is particularly well suited for establishing close contacts to industry and service organizations. The FZI has played a pivotal role in the past successful transfer of research results in the field of optics and photonics to commercial products.
